Federal Government Expenses – Breakdown
The following chart shows the breakdown of expenses by type for the 2010/11 federal budget. Due to the broad nature of spending undertaken by the federal government during this period, these statistics will only give you an overview of the spending that occurred at this time. For more detail, you should visit the budget website. For example, some of the spending in this budget represents the final stages of the stimulus package that was handed down in early 2009. As a result, spending on Education is higher than would otherwise be the case.

However, it is significant to note that the major areas of spending in this budget are similar to most other budgets – social security is by far the biggest area, followed by health. Education, defence and public services are also significant. These figures are indicative of recent budgets in Australia. For the purposes of comparison, the equivalent graph from the 2007/08 Budget (the final Budget handed down by the Howard/Costello government) has been included below.
